The Cryptomatics are an original trio summoning hard blues with funky rhythm and rock & roll delivery. Hailing from Lexington, Kentucky, these three bring years of experience together to create a big sound, ranging from loud rock to spacey ambience, and plenty in between.
The Cryptomatics are:
John Kirkland, Guitar/Vocals: John first picked up a guitar at age 11, and has been playing ever since. As a teenager, John began performing publicly in the early 90s. In 1996, he and John Roberts met. They played in House of Funk and LunaGroova together for several years, recording albums, playing on the radio, and performing live all over the region. John went on to form Groovnotic in 2004, and joined Ultraviolet in 2012. John also has performed and recorded solo at various times over the years. John’s style evolved from blues-driven rock to funk, jazz, jam, psychedelic bluegrass and Americana.
Danny Kelly, Drums: Danny brings many years of drumming experience to The Cryptomatics. Danny performed in Misterrocket, Funk Seminary and Midnight at Noon. He plays a precise style, playing close attention to spaces between notes, and has the rare talent of being able to lay it on heavy without flooding the rest of the music.
John Roberts, Bass: John is a sought-after bassist who’s played in numerous groups since his teenage years. Currently, John also plays with Tribe Called Lex, Miscellaneous Jones, and occasionally fills in with the DeBraun Thomas Trio. He met and began playing with John Kirkland in 1996 with a group called House of Funk. They went on to form LunaGroova, playing funk/jazz/rock originals for several years together. His style of play is original and unmissable—he is truly a musician’s musician.
